This is why past events in the series hint at the future of certain characters. Ulrich, while attempting to save Mikkel, leads Helge to the bunker and starts off the chain of events that will guarantee Mikkel’s disappearance.

This becomes even more clear during Dark season 2's ending. For example, the main storyline is Jonas trying to break the loop, but every action he takes only helps to maintain it. Dark is a show about the consequences of time travel and how characters are stuck in a never-ending cycle of loops, doomed to repeat the same mistakes and to usher the fate they thought they were avoiding.
